Dick McDonald - The Man Behind The Golden Arches Story
When people think about the giant fast-food company with the golden arches, they often picture a certain businessman, but the real story, you know, goes back to two brothers who started it all. Richard “Dick” McDonald, along with his brother Maurice, were the true originators of the quick-service eating place we know today. They were the ones who dreamt up a whole new way of serving food, a system that, in a way, changed how folks eat out. Dick McDonald, who came into the world as Richard James McDonald, had a life that was, in some respects, full of ups and downs. He and his brother Maurice, sometimes called Mac, were born in Manchester, New Hampshire. Their folks, Patrick James McDonald and Margaret Anna Curran McDonald, were from Ireland and made their way to the United States when they were just little ones. Maurice came into the world in 1902, and Dick, a few years later, in 1909. This family, you know, eventually made their way out to California in the 1920s, looking for, well, a better chance at things.
